Name your favorite anime (show, not movie) and what you consider to be the best anime. Are they the same show or different ones? What do you like about them?
For me, I think FMA: Brotherhood is the best anime due to the character diversity, the magic system, the gorgeous battle animation, the power scaling and the clear world building that stays interesting despite needing a good amount of setup.
My favorite anime, however, is Black Jack 21, which is far from perfect and sometimes downright goofy but it makes me happy. This screenshot is from an episode where they transplant a pair of arms onto a sushi chef… by the end of the episode, the wife of the arm donor visits the shop daily to see her husbands hands at work.
Ugh, I love this topic. First, FMA Brotherhood is legitimately one of the best animes of all time. Hard agree. It's a pretty long show, but they did a great job keeping it fresh and avoiding a lot of the pitfalls that come with that many episodes. I'm not familiar with Black Jack 21 though! I might have to look into it.
I'm an old head, so sorry in advance if my choices seem dated or cliche. All I watch anymore is weird shit like people getting reincarnated as vending machines in fantasy worlds
The best? Cowboy Bebop. I think it kind of did for TV what Akira did for movies. It really solidified a new direction for anime and that direction helped open it up to an international market. Beyond its importance, I think the art is beautiful, the music is iconic, and the stories only become more poignant and meaningful the older I get. I also think the setting and design makes it timeless, making it a perfect first anime and prime example of the medium.

My favorite? My gut wants to say Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, but my heart screams "Tenchi!!!!"
Specifically Tenchi Universe. Whenever I get really sad and basic bitch depressed, Tenchi Universe is one of my go to feel better shows. Even though it's kind of responsible for starting the sometimes cringy harem genre, I always liked that most the relationships were platonic and I kind of loved and wanted to be all the girls in the show. Ryoko was my first waifu. Also, it has one of the most banging intros ever.
